One of the most recognisable and well-known paintings in the world is The Mona Lisa. People have copied the Mona Lisa in their works of art over the years or presented their own interpretations of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.

A fabric company that works with natural fibres, ReshaWeaves, revealed their online ad earlier this month that included the Mona Lisa in various Indian weaves. In line with the regional saree that the Italian noblewoman is wearing, the well-edited and imaginative marketing gave Mona Lisa local titles.

The first article, “Mona in Six Yards Across India,” featured a picture of the Mona Lisa wearing what appeared to be an expensive Murshidabad silk saree, coupled with jewellery and a large red bindi, which is customary for Hindu Bengali weddings. Mona Lisa is referred to as “Shona Lisa” in this article.

The posts that followed depicted Mona Lisa in many guises including Lisa Devi from Bihar, Lisa Tai from Maharashtra, Lisa Mol from Kerala, Lisa Maharani from Rajasthan, and Lisa Mami from Tamil Nadu, among many more. In one post, they display the “Lisa Mausi” version of the Mona Lisa from South Delhi, who is dressed to the nines and sporting an iPhone, a luxury bag, and sunglasses.
