Children’s brains are incredibly malleable and develop rapidly during their early years. So, providing them with the right nutrients can significantly enhance their cognitive function and support their overall growth. See the superfoods for a smarter little one.

Now that they are set to resume their school activities again, it is essential to add superfoods that will aid brain functioning in their diets. Infusing these foods into their diet can be a delicious and effective way to boost brain cells and promote healthy brain development.

Fish

Fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, essential for brain development and function. They support the growth of brain cells, improve memory, and enhance cognitive abilities.
So, if you have been looking down on Shawa fish (Salmon), Titus (Mackerel), please have a rethink. Sardines are also an excellent source of omega-3s.

Berries

Berries are packed with antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, which have been linked to improved memory and cognitive function. They may also help protect the brain from age-related decline.
You can add them in their smoothies or just let them snack on during the day.

Avocados

Avocados, known as big pear in Nigeria, are rich in healthy fats, including monounsaturated fats, which support brain health. They also contain potassium, which is essential for nerve function.
You can add this delicious treat for kids as whole fruits or in salads. It can also go as a spread on toast. You can also cut them in shapes that encourage fun learning as they eat.

Whole grains

Whole grains provide complex carbohydrates that fuel the brain and support sustained energy levels. They also contain B vitamins, which are important for brain function and metabolism. Apart from providing them with energy, it also makes them chubby and healthy. So, if you want chubby kids, add whole grains to their diets.

You can easily get them in Nigerian markets and stores. They include Brown rice, Corn, wheat, millets and oats. These grains can be combined together or be prepared separately for kids.

Eggs

Eggs are a complete protein source that provides essential amino acids for brain development and repair. They are also a good source of choline, a nutrient that supports memory and cognitive function.
Two whole eggs provide 294 grams of choline, which covers 100% of choline needs for children ages 1–8 and over 75% of needs for children and teens ages 9–13.

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are packed with healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants. They also contain vitamin E, which protects brain cells from damage. Tiger nuts, Dates and walnuts are all great options.
These nuts can be incorporated into their meals like cornstarch otherwise known in Nigeria as Pap. You can also prepare them as sweeteners for their cereals and smoothies.

Yoghourt

Yoghourt is a good source of protein and probiotics, which can support gut health and brain function. Some studies suggest that gut health may play a role in cognitive development.
Choose plain Greek yoghourt and add fruit, nuts or its extract to it for a delicious treat.

Introduce these superfoods into your child’s diet as early as possible to maximise their benefits. Be creative with the recipes to make mealtime enjoyable for your child and be sure they’ll make you proud in their school activities.
