Diabetes is a condition that occurs when blood sugar levels are too high, and it can be caused by a number of factors:
There are many types of diabetes, including the three main types: Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational
Other types of diabetes include: Monogenic diabetes, Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, Diabetes caused by rare syndromes, and Steroid-induced diabetes.
Below are what experts have said can lead to having diabetes:
1. Unhealthy lifestyle
Being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
2. Genetics
A family history of type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes can increase the risk of developing diabetes.
3. Pancreatic damage
Pancreatic issues like pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer can increase the risk of diabetes. Having the pancreas removed can cause type 1 diabetes.
4. Hormonal changes
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause gestational diabetes.
5. Medications
Long-term use of certain medications can cause diabetes.
6. Smoking and alcohol
Smoking and alcohol use can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Other causes of diabetes include: Insulin resistance, Autoimmune disease, and Hormonal imbalances.
