Teachers from Nigeria have been urged to apply for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2016 at globalteacherprize.org.

Now in its second year, the one million Dollars prized award is widely referred to as the Nobel Prize for teaching.

It was set up to recognise a teacher, who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession as well as shine a spotlight in society.

At the last edition, 98 teachers from Nigeria applied for the prize, which was a lower figure than some other countries such as the United States (174) and India (193). As a result, Nigeria had no teachers in the final 50 shortlisted candidates while other African nations such as Morocco, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Madagascar all featured.
T
his year, if teachers from Nigeria apply and are shortlisted as top 50 candidates and top ten finalists, their inspirational stories would be publicised to raise the bar for in the profession.

The closing date for applications is October 10, 2015.
