Demolished illegal mining site in Kogi State

The Gada Biyu community in the Bauchi metropolis has called for immediate government intervention to regulate mining operations in the area.

Residents made this appeal on Friday in Bauchi during a protest led by the ‘Media Advocacy on Climate Change Initiative against unregulated mining activities in their community.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mrs Jilima Bishari highlighted the severe impact of mining on women and children, including pollution, water contamination, harm to livestock, and child labour.

“We are calling for rigorous enforcement of state mining laws to safeguard the well-being of women and children and for immediate action to stop the exploitation of vulnerable groups, including minors,” she said.

“There is also an urgent need for a sustainable approach that considers the health and safety of those living near mines, and action to address the severe environmental damage and health risks posed by mining companies.”

In response, Mr Tukur Ibrahim, Director of Mines and Surveillance at the Federal Ministry of Mines, Bauchi office, stated that the ministry is responsible for regulating mining activities in Nigeria.

He said that the ministry aims to exploit the nation’s mineral resources in an environmentally sustainable manner and to establish a vibrant minerals and metals industry.

He assured residents that an assessment would be conducted on the mining activities in the Gada Biyu community.
