Cult Clash: Help the police, Ondo deputy gov begs Owo residents
The Ondo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, has urged residents of Owo to assist the police with critical information following recent clashes between rival cult groups that left five people dead.
The violence, which occurred over the past fortnight in the ancient town, has prompted the state government to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew, while the police confirmed the arrest of 19 suspects connected to the clashes.
Speaking at a security summit organised by the Owo Youths Forum on Sunday, Adelami, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Falohun, condemned the killings and warned that continued unrest could tarnish the town’s reputation.
He emphasised the need for collaboration with security agencies.
“Police and other security agencies are not spirits; you need to inform them,” Adelami stated. “If we must move forward, all hands must be on deck. These boys are not inherently bad. We need to engage them, address grievances, and provide opportunities, as unemployment often fuels these crises.”
The summit also highlighted allegations of political involvement in the crisis. Odunayo Folahanmi, a member of the forum, accused politicians of arming youths as political thugs.
“It is evident that politicians are engaging these cultists. When arrests are made, political leaders interfere, undermining justice.”

In a similar vein, Owo Police Area Commander Adenike Peter criticised political and parental interference, urging parents to monitor their children and encourage accountability.
“Many times, politicians intervene to secure the release of suspects, enabling these crimes to persist. We need actionable information from the public to curb this menace,” she said.
Forum organiser Damilare Aina proposed sustained stakeholder engagement to educate and empower youths, calling for long-term strategies to ensure peace in Owo.
The Ondo State government has pledged to work with community leaders and security agencies to restore order.
