Ghana rebuilds demolished Nigerian building
Federal Government has commended the Ghanaian government for rebuilding and handing over a property belonging to the High Commission of Nigeria in Accra, Ghana.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, yesterday, by the acting spokesperson, Mr Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Ghana officially handed over a building belonging to the High Commission of Nigeria in Accra, Ghana, yesterday.
The demolition of the building by the Ghanaian authorities in 2020 generated controversies. The Nigerian government strongly condemned the development since it legitimately acquired the land. The House of Representatives then directed that the Ghanaian government rebuild the structure.
Following a series of high-level engagements, the block of four-bedroom flats was reconstructed.
The handing over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, was described by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as commendable and a symbol of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with Nigeria.
The keys to the building were received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was represented by the Director of Foreign Service Academy, Lagos, Ambassador Chimezie Ogu, on behalf of the Nigerian government.
Speaking with The Guardian on the development, a retired foreign service officer and former Nigerian Ambassador to Mexico, Ogbole Amedu-Ode, urged Nigerians to accept the gesture towards strengthening relations with Ghana.
