Group distributes 500 menstrual pads to school girls
A non-governmental organisation, Rotary Club of Abeokuta Royale, has distributed menstrual pads to over 500 secondary school girls in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital in commemoration of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.
The organisation, in collaboration with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, described girls as essential stakeholders in society and that their sexual and reproductive health and rights should be prioritised by all.
At the programme themed: “Pad Up 500 Girls,” the guest speaker, Lawrita Agbor charged the girls at Baptist Girls College School, Abeokuta, to brace up for the future, rise above sexual and gender-based violence and pursue their dreams.
Miss Agbor, a girls’ rights advocate, sensitised the girls on how to have confidence through personal hygiene and empowerment self-defence.
She said girl child are capable of attaining any height in life, adding, “As the world celebrates girls today, advocates have renewed calls that girls be provided the right to a safe, educated and healthy life, not only during critical formative years but also as they mature into women because this will allow them to explore their potential to change the world.”
