A socio-political group, the Concerned Edo Citizens Forum (CECF), on Friday cautioned against the proposed creation of 31 additional states, urging the National Assembly to rather direct its energies toward making laws for the betterment of society.
The group said the creation of more states in Nigeria at this time is seriously unnecessary, unwarranted, and uncalled for.
The Concerned Edo Citizens Forum called on the National Assembly to immediately discard the proposal, as it would drastically reduce Nigeria’s potency in all ramifications.
In a statement signed by the convener, Roy Oribhabor, the group said, “We are seriously bothered about this proposal for new states when there are established facts that some states are not viable as of today. What are the reasons behind this new development of the creation of more states?
“We hereby call on the National Assembly to direct their energies to make laws for the betterment of society, not to act otherwise. The hunger and frustration in the land should be the utmost concern to the House of Representatives, not dancing in unseriousness in the name of state creation.”
Oribhabor further noted that the actions of the House of Representatives negate a basic understanding of Nigeria and its people, adding that it further showed that the House of Representatives is not in touch with reality.

“As concerned citizens, we should be thinking of repositioning Nigeria for greatness because agitation for more states is an unending conversation within ethnic nationalities with selfish reasons to undermine the Nigerian state,” Oribhabor added.
Continuing, Oribhabor said that the creation of more states would increase poverty in Nigeria and encourage a higher level of unemployment, explaining that there are no economic reasons behind the creation of more states in Nigeria, only selfish, wicked, and unpatriotic motives.
