Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed deep concern over the internal crisis in Nigeria’s two major opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said: “APC’s actions resemble those of a communist party. The stifling of internal democracy, the suppression of dissent, and the economic strangulation of the masses are all warning signs that Nigeria is heading down a dangerous path.”
He accused the APC, which is controlling the Federal Government, of masterminding the turmoil as part of efforts to weaken political opposition and gradually implement an authoritarian regime.
According to the group, the ruling party is deliberately sowing the seed of discord within the PDP and LP to consolidate its grip on power. It alleged that the APC was working behind the scenes to sabotage internal democracy within the opposition parties, while appearing uninvolved.
HURIWA cited the recent political upheavals within the PDP as a direct result of the APC’s clandestine interference. A key example, the group noted, was the appointment of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, a prominent PDP figure, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
It alleged that Wike’s appointment was part of a broader scheme to destabilise the PDP from within, as “his loyalty to the opposition party is in question,” given his collaboration with the APC-led administration.
Further, HURIWA condemned the decision by President Bola Tinubu to exempt the FCT Ministry from the Treasury Single Account (TSA). The exclusion, according to the rights group, is an arbitrary move that plays into the hands of Wike, positioning him as a powerful force within the PDP who, despite holding office under the APC government, continues to wield influence over his party’s internal affairs.
In addition to its concerns about the PDP, HURIWA also raised the alarm over the ongoing internal leadership struggle within LP. The group pointed to the refusal of the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, to vacate his position after his tenure had reportedly expired, as evidence of a seeming interference from APC.
It said Abure’s continued stranglehold on power, despite legal and constitutional challenges, was being stoked by external forces, particularly the executive arm of government.
The association claimed that the APC’s apparent support for Abure was designed to cripple the LP and weaken the political influence of its key leader, Peter Obi, who emerged as a significant challenger during the 2023 general elections.
HURIWA urged Nigerians to be vigilant and resist any attempt to undermine the country’s democratic structures. It called for immediate action to preserve fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech and association, which it believed were under serious threat.
