IBEDC advises residents on safety during rainy season
Following the start of the rainy season, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has appealed for caution around electrical installations, stressing that the period comes with increased risk of electrical accidents.
The acting Managing Director of the firm, Francis Agoha, who disclosed this in a statement by IBEDC’s spokesperson, Busolami Tunwase, said it is crucial to take proactive steps to safeguard oneself and property.
He said the safety of customers and stakeholders remains the firm’s topmost priority. Agoha, who disclosed this during a facility inspection, said: “We are dedicated to providing a secure and dependable power supply, while educating our communities on staying safe during the rainy season. Through vigilant maintenance, rapid emergency response, and continuous public outreach, we strive to minimise risks.” He listed some measures, which he said would help customers stay safe.
According to him, people should avoid contact with fallen power lines and immediately report such incidents to IBEDC’s emergency services. They should also steer clear of flooded areas and refrain from touching electrical fixtures, especially if electrical equipment is involved.
He urged customers to regularly ensure that electrical connections in their homes or business premises are secure and shielded from water. They should also watch out for exposed wires or malfunctioning connections.
Furthermore, he encouraged the use of protective gear, such as rubber-soled shoes, and warned against contact with metal objects when outdoors during heavy rainfall to minimise the risk of electrical accidents.
He enjoined consumers to keep IBEDC’s emergency contact numbers close at hand, and reach out if they notice any electrical hazards or experience power disruptions.
