THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on students to peacefully participate in the forthcoming general elections.

At a national students solidarity parley yesterday in Abuja, NANS President, Tijani Shehu Usman, charged all students to vote in the elections but desist from all acts of violence. He said: “The current leadership of NANS has changed from the orientation of times past and condemns the violence ideology.

“This time, we have resolved to stand firmly for the peaceful conduct of the elections and for the one-man-one-vote system. We have also resolved firmly that any government that has done well needs to be firmly commended and we commend the administration of President (Goodluck) Jonathan and support his re-election.

“NANS is a symbol of integrity and pride and does not stand for violence in any form. Students should portray themselves accordingly, as expected of future leaders, and should steer from being used as pawns and devices in activities that may be detrimental to the unity and security of the nation. NANS asserts the unity of all Nigerians and the state.”

Commending the President Jonathan administration for its development strides as outlined in the education sector, he cited the resolution of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) problem, which he said had spanned many past administrations. He urged the government to replicate that in the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).
