A gang of armed robbers operating in Enugu have reportedly killed three Policemen attached to Newhaven Police station, Enugu at a checkpoint on Thursday night.

It was learnt that policemen were on a stop and search duty along the ZC Obi road linking Newhaven and Independence layout when the robbers swooped on them.

But the Police in Enugu said that only two of the policemen were killed. Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu state, Ebere Amaraizu told The Guardian yesterday that “it was a sudden attack”, stressing that the gun men started firing at the policemen the moment they got to the check point.

Eye-witnesses said the incident took place at about 8.30 pm Thursday night, adding that the armed men, who numbered about four, operated on a Camry car.

It was learnt that they had, on spotting the checkpoint manned by four policemen who parked their vehicle beside the road, opened fire, which sent drivers of other vehicles on queue scampering for safety.
