NYCN backs INEC, warns parties against distractions

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Youth organisations under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), have declared their support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning political parties against distracting the electoral body ahead of the 2027 general elections.

They called on politicians to respect judicial pronouncements and allow INEC to focus on preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the rally in Abuja during a solidarity visit to INEC, the President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Babangida Onimisi Isah, alongside other youth leaders, cautioned against dragging the electoral body into partisan matters.

He stressed that the visit was not driven by personal or political interests but represented the collective voice of Nigerian youths.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his developmental strides and for promoting youth inclusion in governance.

Isah further expressed confidence in the appointment of the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, noting that the commission’s leadership has demonstrated commitment to upholding the rule of law within a short period.

According to him, no political party is bigger than INEC or the country, emphasising that Nigeria’s unity must take precedence over partisan interests. He added that the President is making efforts to reform the nation and steer it toward progressive development.

He urged political parties not to bring their internal crises before INEC, describing the commission as an independent institution that must be allowed to function without interference.

The youth leader also advised aggrieved parties to seek redress through the courts where necessary, rather than attempting to involve the electoral body in matters outside its mandate.

Reaffirming their commitment to peace and national unity, the groups noted that Nigeria remains the only country they have and must be protected.

The group urged INEC to remain unwavering in its decisions so far. They also commended president Bola Tinubu’s leadership style of carrying the youths along and for initiating key programs that aid their welfare.

The group also commended the Kogi state government for following the leadership style of the federal government.
