Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West part of the country have urged members of the party to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu, regardless of his shortcomings.

Say Tinubu didn’t make himself President

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West part of the country have urged members of the party to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu, regardless of his shortcomings.

This is despite the economic challenges facing ordinary Nigerians that led to a cost of living crisis and sparked a nationwide protest more than twice this year.

Speaking on behalf of the leaders at the APC South-West Zone Assembly meeting in Lagos, former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, urged Nigerians to rally behind Tinubu, emphasising that his rise to the presidency was not a solo run, but the result of a concerted effort by Yoruba leadership.

In a viral post sighted on X, yesterday, key political leaders from the region reflected on the pivotal role they played in the political rise of Tinubu.
Osoba, during the assembly, underscored the strategic decision taken by South West leaders in 2007 to elevate Tinubu from state-level politics in Lagos to the national political arena.

“[Tinubu] didn’t make himself the President of Nigeria; we did,” Osoba said. “Seventeen years ago, after his tenure as the governor of Lagos, we gathered at a luncheon organised by Alhaji Hamsa, our leader in the South West at that time. At that meeting, we collectively decided that [Tinubu] should move from Lagos politics to the national stage, to represent the interests of the Yoruba people at the topmost level of Nigerian politics.”

The assembly also reflected on past political struggles faced by the Yoruba people, especially their long-standing pursuit of leadership at the national level.

“Many of us here today worked tirelessly to support the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s quest for the presidency, but he wasn’t allowed to get there,” Osoba continued. “Similarly, we rallied behind the late Moshood Abiola’s presidential ambition, but we lost him, and with him, the opportunity. They killed many of us because of our mission to make this country better. But we thank God that some of us are still alive to witness Tinubu’s success.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of lagos, at the event, said the stakeholders gathered as one big family to work together for the progress of the region in particular and that of Nigeria at large.

He emphasised that the gathering was to reinvigorate hope in people, saying the strong Omoluabi ethos in the South West should be engendered for the progress of the region and the country.

The governor appealed to the leaders and other members to give adequate support to the President, adding “We should strive to forge ahead of the 2027 election.”
