The people of Okuama Community, in Ughelli South Local Council of Delta State, have again been thrown into anxiety as armed soldiers reportedly stormed the community through gunboats yesterday.

A leader of the community said that the military operation followed prior drone monitoring of the community on Sunday.

The distraught community leader said:  “As I speak, soldiers and some youths have stormed our community, shooting at anything in sight. They parked their boats at Okoloba and came on foot. The small tents we have built are being razed.

“Everyone is in disarray; I can’t find my child; why are we being treated in this manner?

“Why will soldiers team up with our enemies to attack us? Our leaders were arrested weeks ago, and now they have come to sack the community.”

He added that the soldiers were still searching for suspects and weapons, noting that they are still not comfortable with community leaders who went to court to claim damages over their illegal arrest.”

He called on the government to save the community from military invasion weeks after arresting Okuama’s leaders, following the killings of military personnel who were on a peace-keeping mission to the area.

A community youth, who spoke to newsmen after returning from his hideout, recounted that the military personnel came in four gunboats and 11 speedboats shooting sporadically.

He disclosed that they came on land through Okoloba Community after earlier using drones to monitor the community on Sunday.

Three youths were reportedly killed by the soldiers, Ojeh Asah, Uwhubunor James, and Enavwodo Peter.

According to the source, “This morning at about 3:00 a.m., we got the information that about 15 gunboats are coming to our area, and we all came out to observe, and we were awake from that time to about 6:00 a.m.”
