Tinubu to address National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu is set to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with organising the national celebration.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, inaugurated the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, describing the presidential address as one of the major highlights of the commemoration.

Akume said Democracy Day remains a significant moment for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and citizens who fought for the restoration of democratic governance in the country.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, especially the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, widely regarded as the symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

According to the SGF, the anniversary also offers the Federal Government an opportunity to showcase efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, deepening governance, and advancing national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

He urged members of the committee to commence work immediately, stressing that preparations must be concluded within the remaining 10 days before the celebration.

Akume added that this year’s Democracy Day activities would reflect the mood of the nation and underscore the government’s commitment to prudent management of public resources.
Activities scheduled for the 27th Democracy Day celebration will begin with a world press conference on June 4.

Special Juma’at prayers will hold on June 5, while an interdenominational church service is slated for June 7.

A Democracy Day public lecture will take place on June 9, followed by youth- and women-focused programmes on June 10.

President Tinubu is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on June 12.
The celebration will culminate in a Democracy Day gala night on June 12.
