The body of Queen Elizabeth II was finally laid to rest yesterday after a colourful, elaborate and intricate ceremony inside one of the royal vaults at King George VI Memorial Chapel.
Here is what to know about the Royal Vault.

The Royal Vault was constructed between 1804 and 1810 under the orders of King George III.

The King George VI Memorial Chapel is located in Windsor and is a part of St. George’s Chapel.

It lies beneath the chapel within the Windsor Castle grounds and was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth in 1962 as a burial place for her father, who died 10 years before.

Construction on the chapel was officially completed in 1969 and was the first addition to St George’s Chapel since 1504, when Henry VII was still on the throne.

The Queen’s Mother was buried in the Memorial Chapel after her funeral on April 9, 2002.

Many more Kings and Queens are interred in the rest of St George’s Chapel, as it has been the burial place of every monarch since 1820.

Excluding Prince Philip, who will soon be moved to be buried with the Queen, there are currently 24 Royal Family members buried in St George’s Chapel’s Royal Vault.

Queen Elizabeth died at the age of 96 after reigning for 70 years as the Queen of England and some Commonwealth realms.
