POLICE and gunmen are exchanging fire in the north-western Pakistani city of Peshawar, after explosions were reported at a Shia mosque.

Doctors said at least 10 people had been killed and dozens more injured.

Attackers reportedly entered the mosque in Peshawar’s wealthy Hayatabad district and started firing at a crowd of worshippers during Friday prayers.

Two weeks ago, another attack on a Shia mosque Sindh province’s Shikarpur district left more than 60 people dead.

Sunni militants linked to the Taliban said they had carried out the Shikarpur attack, which was the worst in years.

In Peshawar, TV footage on Friday showed people running from the scene, some carrying wounded people on their shoulders.

Police said militants had thrown grenades before raiding the mosque and opening fire on worshippers.

No group has said it carried out the attack.
