The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR) on Saturday expressed worry over the widespread instances of blatant vote buying and selling across several polling units, despite the presence of security personnel during today’s governorship election in Edo State.

Briefing newsmen on its interim statement on the 2024 Edo Governorship election, Yunusa Z. Ya’u Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room said it observed the ongoing governorship election in Edo State with worrisome incidents of vote buying and selling across several polling units.

It equally noted that the election is taking place amidst pre-election tension and a proliferation of fake news, which contributed to heightened anxiety in the state.

While lamenting widespread vote trading, Ya’u said the Situation Room observers reported widespread instances of blatant vote buying and selling across several polling units, despite the huge presence of security personnel.

“The price of votes ranged from ₦5,000 to ₦10,000 per voter in several locations, including PU08 and 09 Ward 2, Owan-East LGA; PU 02 Ward 2, Etsako-West LGA; and several polling units in Egor, Oredo and Owan-West LGAs. In some cases, voters were also induced with food items such as bread and “Gala”.

Commenting on the issue of Fake News, Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room said that the election environment has been further charged by the spread of fake news, adding has contributed to confusion among voters and heightened tension at several polling locations.

According to the convener, there were three major fake news propagated on the eve of the election, largely affecting the three major political parties.

The NCSSR commended the peaceful conduct of voters throughout the process.

“We urge them to remain so. The Situation Room will continue to observe developments as they unfold and provide a comprehensive report after the polls,” Ya’u said.

“We urge all stakeholders, including INEC, security agencies, and political parties, to ensure the smooth conduct of the election and to refrain from any acts that could undermine the integrity of the process.”
