Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced that the state government has increased its monthly payment to offset the backlog of pension and gratuity to retired civil servants from N1 billion to N2 billion.

Speaking at the 2024 Rivers State Civil Service Week, with the theme, “Building Resilient Education for Increased Access to Inclusive Lifelong Quality and Relevant Learning in the Rivers State Civil Service,” held at the Alfred Diete Spiff Civic Centre in Port Harcourt, Fubara explained that the decision was to clear the backlog and ensure effective implementation of gratuities and pensions payments to retired civil servants.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Fubara also revealed that the state will be among the first to adopt the new minimum wage approved by the Federal Government as soon as it takes effect.

He said: “As soon as the Federal Government releases the implementation modalities for the new minimum wage, I reassure you that Rivers State will be one of the first states in the country to implement it.

“We recognise that the civil service is the institutional memory of the government. No government can stand without its support; as civil servants, you are the health professionals caring for our health, the teachers training our children, and judicial officers ensuring justice. You are the people in virtually every spectrum of life and governance.”

The governor acknowledged that because growing and developing the state is an important task that must be accomplished, his administration has reintroduced the training of resident doctors and recruitment of new ones, recruitment of tutorial and non-tutorial staff for Universal Basic Education and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, approved the certification of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) staff in various digital certifications, instituted the state health insurance scheme, appointed new permanent secretaries with new vehicles to enhance performance and promised that his administration will do all within its means to ensure improved wellbeing civil servants.

Also, the Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, congratulated civil servants on their week, urging them to build a resilient and inclusive civil service that prioritises education and continuous learning.
