The Rivers State Government has expressed its support for the revival of the fashion industry in the state. The government aims to assist individuals, particularly women struggling with their businesses, by providing grants and other support to help them navigate and excel.

The project will be implemented through a fashion festival at Obiwali Center between October 26 and 27, 2024. Fashion is recognized as a significant contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) outside of the oil and gas sector.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Founding Director of the project, Boma Ogidigben, noted that the fashion industry has been neglected in Port Harcourt for years, while other states have thrived. He expressed regret that the city was lagging behind and affirmed that the project would revitalize the industry.

The Communications Director, Oby Ivy Fakae, explained that the event is divided into phases, including an exhibition, runway show, Women Entrepreneurship summit, and a festival party. She highlighted the grant aspect of the summit to encourage women businesses, stating that most struggling businesses belong to women and they will receive free booths to exhibit their products.

Osuiefien Tayo, the Exhibition/Private Runway Director, emphasized the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs and the importance of providing not only grants but also counseling and follow-up support. He stated, “We are creating a fashion space in the Niger Delta. It will be a great opportunity to get new business partners.”

The project is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative supported by several sponsors, including Elshcon Limited, Lamic Autos, and Save A Life Group. Approximately 500 business women are expected to participate in the summit, while over 10,000 buyers, sellers, and participants are anticipated.
