AT some point life slaps all of us with a good reminder that shifts our perspectives. Personally I have been slapped with several of these reminders over the years. Today I want to pass a few of them along to you. One, everything that happens helps you grow. Circumstances will direct you, correct you and perfect you over time.

Sometimes, these circumstances knock you down. There will be times when it seems everything could go wrong and is going wrong. It feels you are stuck in the rut forever. But it won’t last forever. When you feel like quitting, remember that things have to go wrong before they can be right. At times, you have to go through the worst to arrive at your best. Indeed, our most significant opportunities are often found in times of great difficulty. Thus you will face your greatest opposition when you are closest to your biggest miracle.

Two, the way you feel about people and situations will shift. Which is why just because you liked something at a point in time, it does not mean you will always like it, or that you will continue to like it at all points. To be loyal to yourself is to allow yourself to grow and change. You should challenge who you once were and what you once thought. You should never be too sure of anything that means you are growing, not stagnant or shrinking.

Three, there will always be more tough changes for you to make. Growth is painful, change is the only permanent law of nature, it is painful too. You were not the same person you were a month or a year ago. Experiences don’t stop, you are always growing. It takes courage to accept change and the opportunity to make change happen. You must be angling for change if you are to make the best of your talent.

Four, those who complain most, accomplish the least. It is always better to attempt greatness and fail rather than do nothing. Take action regardless of results, true happiness arrives only when you stop complaining. Your happiness depends on the quality of your thoughts. The mind as the battleground of desire will rob you of peace and joy, if you failed to act on your ideas. A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset. You are what you think. The moment you start acting that life is a blessing, it will start to feel like one.

Five, what is your vision for this year? Where there is no vision, the people perish. Proverbs 29:18. It takes as much effort to live an unfulfilled life as a richly rewarding one. Some scientists have recently estimated that the human brain has between 10 and 100 terabytes of capacity – meaning we have lots of room for growth. A rewarding thing you can do this year is to work to develop your mind. Where there is no sense of direction, the people perish. Anguish does not come from the absence of things, but the absence of direction. Many of us merely exist because we have settled for less than Jehovah intended.

The quality of your life will be determined by your vision, action and your willingness to put your vision into reality. So, make a written list of the areas where you will like to grow this year. Don’t ever be discouraged by difficulties. Nothing great was ever created suddenly. Life is a process, you have to keep plugging away. Never give up. It is better to die for something than to live for nothing. And unless you try something beyond what you have already mastered, you won’t grow.

Six, it is a cliché to say that every journey begins with the first step, yet it is true. Men of talent don’t wait for everything to be perfect to move forward. They don’t allow fear to stop their ambition. They take initiative. Like great leaders, champions make momentum their friends. As soon as they take the initiative and start, momentum takes over and problems take care of themselves. Where you finish in life isn’t determined by where you start but whether you started at all. Initiative closes the door to fear.

More so, initiative opens the door to opportunity. An American hero, Benjamin Franklin asserted that people who take initiative may succeed or fail, but anyone who does not take initiative is guaranteed to fail..

The best illustration of the power of initiative is the story of the patenting of the telephone. Two men Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray filed their ideas at the patent office on the same day: 14 February 1876. Bell was the fifth person on record that day who filed for a patent. He filed it in person. On the other hand, Gray sent his solicitor, who arrived an hour after Bell, applying for a caveat a declaration of intention to apply for a patent. Those minutes cost Gray a fortune, as Bell’s claim was upheld in court even though Gray claimed he came with the idea first. Talent without initiative never reaches its potentials.
