Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has said that the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, which the state is hosting in 2026, will be a memorable experience for athletes and spectators.

It will be the first time Enugu State is hosting the National Sports Festival since its inception in 1973. The 2026 edition will also be the second time the fiesta is taking place in the South-East region after Imo State hosted the 1998 edition in Owerri.

Mbah made the pledge when he received the hosting rights award letter from the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade. The Enugu State Governor expressed gratitude to the NSC for presenting the State with the official hosting letter saying that it represented a proud moment for the people of Enugu State.

“Enugu State has a rich sporting history that dates back to the pre-independence era,” Mbah said. “Beyond being a commercial hub of our nation, we have woven ourselves into the fabric of sports excellence.

“We are fully prepared to host the National Sports Festival and have already embarked on several projects to ensure our facilities meet world-class standards. The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, along with other key facilities, will be ready to deliver a memorable experience for athletes and spectators alike,” the Governor stated.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Ministry of Sports and University of Port Harcourt have reached a partnership, which will see athletes of the State camp and train at the facilities of the Institution ahead the upcoming Gateway 2025 National Sports Festival.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to seal the partnership at the University of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Chris Green, described facilities at the institution as some of the best, not just in Nigeria, but across the continent.

According to him, the benefits of the alliance will be latent and positively affect the chances of Team Rivers emerging among the top finishers at the upcoming NSF.
