The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has called on sportsmen and enthusiasts to remain steadfast in the pursuit of excellence, saying that the country is on the verge of reclaiming its position among the top nations in the sector.

Senator Enoh, who admitted that Nigeria has experienced some bad times in international sports in recent times, said the country would begin to excel in sports if all stakeholders come together to work for its development.

Speaking after performing the ceremonial tee-off of the 2024 Independence Day Golf Tournament, at the IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja, the minister said: “Nigerian sports has been characterised by ups and downs, we have had some good days and some bad days. But the point must be made that in the last year plus, we have remained focused; we have tried to avoid the pitfalls of the past.

“I have made the point that the fiasco and the disaster of the 2024 Olympics can only make us to now learn things the hard way and make sure that we change from our tendency to fund competitions, which is not the fault of this administration, to begin sports development and preparations early enough to see that we don’t get back to this point any more.”

Looking back on the performances of Nigerian athletes in the past 64 years, the sports minister called for patience, perseverance, and unity of purpose in reviving the sports sector.

Other dignitaries at the tournament, including former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, also called on Nigerians to remain calm and find ways of helping the country to come out of the current economic hardship.

Dogara enjoined Nigerians to be patient, saying that other countries have witnessed devastation far exceeding what the nation is experiencing and came out of it better.

“Even a former Third World nation like Korea has come out of their situation to become a First World nation. So, I will urge all Nigerians to look at what we can do together and not what any government can do for us. With that mindset, we will come out of the situation.”
