‘Perpetrators of Lekki Toll-gate massacre should face justice’
Following the report of the judicial panel of inquiry set up to unravel the killings at Lekki Toll-gate in Lagos during the nationwide #EndSARS protests, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Ogun State, John Adegbola, has urged the Federal Government to try the perpetrators.
In a statement, Adegbola said the report had settled all contradictions, insisting that the families of the victims must be compensated.
He said: “I am happy that this report has put an end to all the lies being peddled by government handlers. All officers of the police and the military found wanting should be sanctioned, as well as brought to book. Families of identified victims should be compensated.”
He, however, urged holistic reform of the Nigeria Police Force for better result.
Adegbola, who lauded the panel on the report, said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration must protect human rights, as no government could take away the right of the citizens to protest.
“To crown it all, government should ensure that a comprehensive reform of the police is carried out so that these innocent citizens don’t die in vain.
“The present government needs to do better in the area of human rights violations. You can’t take away the right to protest from an oppressed nation. President Muhammadu Buhari himself participated in protests in the past, why is he now clamping down on anyone who protests against the failed government?”
Adegbola also urged international bodies and organisations to bar government officials and officers who are involved from entering their countries.
He said: “The action will serve as deterrent to other ‘tyrants.’
