Take UNILORIN to greater height, alumni task new VC
The University of Ilorin Alumni Association, yesterday, tasked the newly appointed vice chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, to take the institution to greater heights.
The association, through its chairman and coordinator, Prof. Jeleel Ojuade, said the University of Ilorin has created a niche for itself in the comity of tertiary institutions in Africa, stressing that Egbewole could not have come at a more auspicious time.
Egbewole was named on Thursday as the 11th vice-chancellor. He will take over in October from the current vice-chancellor, Sulyman Age Abdulkareem.
In a statement, the association said: “We heartily felicitate with Prof. Abdulwahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN) on his appointment by the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin and subsequent ratification by the Federal Government of Nigeria as the eleventh substantive vice chancellor of the ‘Better by Far’ University, the University of Ilorin.”
It noted that Egbewole’s “appointment did not come to us as a surprise, judging by your profound scholarly erudition and immense administrative experience.”
The association also “put it on record that your previous string of successes in your earlier assignments, within and outside the university, especially your immediate professional community, the Nigerian Bar Association, are a testament, as well as an indicator of a successful outing even in this new role.
“The import of your appointment at this challenging time in our educational trajectory is not lost on us.”
The alumni body said the onerous task before he is how to take the institution from where it is today to a new height, where it competes favourably with any other institution anywhere in the world.
It added: “UNILORIN alumni are proud performers wherever they are. Your coming, at a time our country’s education faces humongous challenges of academic calendar instability, curriculum advancement complexities and general infrastructure inadequacies and decay, places on your shoulder a very heavy responsibility.
“However, we are convinced that with Allah on your side, your tenure in office will end in success, no matter how daunting the task is.”
