Though the microwave is seen as an easy-to-use device, it can cause disaster if misused if the rules are flouted or it malfunctions.

What is the worst thing that can happen? Fire which could set your apartment ablaze if not burning the entire building.

A microwave is your go-to appliance if you want to defrost, bake, cook and just heat up your food. However, as pleasant as the household electrical appliance is, it can explode and burn a human being if misused or faulty and leaks radiation.

To avoid these disasters, it is important to know how to operate the microwave correctly, especially the timing, to know the food that can be microwaved as well as to use safe utensils.

How To Use A Microwave
• Study the manual as each brand and model has its own functions such as pre-set programmes, power usage, cleaning procedures, and other useful information.

• When you plug your microwave, avoid plugging other electrical appliances or devices at the same time due to its radiation capacity.

• Put your food in microwave-safe utensils and cover it, otherwise it would cause damage to the microwave and food. Note that failure to cover your food could lead to splattering. Also, note that not all food can be microwaved.

• Based on your user manual, know the appropriate time duration to set for each food or edible. Then set in the timer by either pressing the number buttons or turning the knob depending on your microwave. It is important to note that overtime could lead to fire explosions or burnt food.

• While heating your food, do not open the microwave until the programme has run its due course. However, if you feel the need to stop the programme, use the stop/pause button.

• Clean your microwave regularly, especially if there is food splatter. Do not use gel or water spray inside the microwave. Use a wet towel to clean the stains and wipe them off with a dry towel.
