Braces are a common orthodontic treatment used to straighten teeth and improve your smile. They can correct a wide range of dental issues, including crooked, gapped, rotated, or crowded teeth.

Braces use mild, constant pressure to shift your teeth into their proper positions over time. The exact way this happens depends on the type of braces you choose. There are many types: metal, ceramic, self-ligating, lingual, and clear aligners. It’s quite common among young adults now. Some have even used them as a fashion piece to show off glittery smiles, but this comes with discomfort, especially during the first few days. While braces can be a bit uncomfortable at first, proper care can minimise discomfort and ensure successful treatment. Here’s how you can care for and maintain your braces:

1. Maintain good oral hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for brace wearers. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Pay extra attention to the areas around your braces, as food particles can easily get stuck there. Flossing is also crucial to remove plaque and food debris from between your teeth. Thread the floss carefully around the wires and under the archwires. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water after brushing and flossing to remove any remaining debris.

2. Watch your diet

Certain foods can damage your braces or make them more difficult to keep clean. Avoid sticky foods like candy, gum, and taffy, as they can pull on your braces and cause them to come loose. Hard foods, such as nuts, popcorn, and hard candy, can also damage your braces or break a wire. Be cautious with chewy foods like bread and meat, as they can get stuck between your braces and wires. Limit your intake of sugary drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay and plaque buildup. Instead, opt for water or unsweetened beverages.

3. Protect your braces

If you play sports or participate in activities that could result in a fall or impact, wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth. A mouthguard can help prevent your braces from breaking or shifting.

4. Avoid harmful habits

Certain habits can damage your braces or cause discomfort. Nail-biting can put pressure on your braces and potentially break a wire. Chewing on pens, nails, or ice can also damage your braces and teeth. Additionally, avoid trying to crack bones, as it can damage your teeth. Avoid these habits to maintain the purpose of your braces.

5. Do regular check-ups

It’s important to schedule regular check-ups with your orthodontist to monitor your progress and address any issues that may arise. Your orthodontist will adjust it as needed to ensure they are working effectively. They will also advise you on what to do if the braces feel too tight.

6. Use orthodontic wax

If your braces are causing irritation, apply orthodontic wax to the sore areas. The wax can help create a protective barrier between it and your mouth.

Braces are not a fashion piece, so once your orthodontist confirms that your teeth are aligned, remove the braces. Prolonged wearing may actually lead to bacterial infections and cause more discomfort for you.
